Mi’gmaq Wolastoqey Indigenous Fisheries Management Association

MWIFMA’s mission is to promote the sustainable management and conservation of aquatic and ocean ecosystems in the territories and areas of activity of the Mi’gmaqs of Gesgapegiag, the Mi’gmaqs of Gespeg Mi’gmaqs, as well as the Maliseets of Wolastoqiyik Wahsipekuk, formerly known as the Maliseets of Viger First Nation, while promoting their interests, participation in co-management processes, and diversification of their fisheries and aquaculture.

MWIFMA aims to become a key partner in the collaborative management of aquatic and oceanic resources, guided by conservation principles to ensure the sustainability and integrity of ecosystems for future generations. In addition, MWIFMA is determined to become a center of information exchange and cooperation of its members; and aims to promote the development, autonomy and innovation of Mi’gmaq and Wolastoqey fisheries, while privileging the integration of Indigenous traditional knowledge to the scientific approach.
